For your Eyes only - Eye opening techniques

We all know - Mother Nature can be a bitch!

For many of us when looking in the mirror at our eyes it can trigger a heavy sigh, where did they go?

When I hit 40 I noticed my own beauty needs were changing. Being married, bringing up two children while juggling career, life pressures, and the dog were taking their toll on my looks. I noticed the inevitable lines and wrinkles along with dark shadows under my eyes. Especially after a wine fuelled frivolous evening where once I would bounce back, even with limited amount of sleep, now my skin looked dull, tired - and let’s not mention the eyes again! I had to look again at my whole regime in particular - my makeup.

I was 45, at a family gathering, and a flippant comment by one of my brothers galvanised me into action. He said “Ahhh yes, I remember when Aunty Jo was young, she was so glamorous” I had never thought of myself as ‘passed it’ before then - whatever IT was, or the thought of - ‘letting myself go’.

I did have to admit, like most women, I had allowed everyone else’s needs to eclipse mine and the results were there, in that mirror.

I knew what to do, it was just the motivation I lacked, now I was determined.

The key to everything is skin care. Whilst I have always cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin I had neglected the more advanced treatments. So out came the daily eye cream and neck massage. I started to exfoliate daily. I booked in for facials. I started to swim again. I restyled my hair and changed my glasses!

My eyes were the biggest issue for me. That moment when I looked and all I saw were the bags and crepey lids. I needed a plan to restore that lost glow and youthfulness to my tired face.
If you relate to this, then take a breath - inhale - exhale - and follow me.

Let’s embrace and celebrate our eyes.
I am going to share with you some of my eye opening makeup tips to accentuate the most expressive part of your face - your gorgeous eyes!

Point 1

Why bother with a liner?

Eyeliner does for mature eyes what a great fitting dress does for your figure, it enhances and completes the look. It can change the shape of your eyes to open them up and draw attention making them appear bigger turning our eyes from tired to glamorous in seconds.

One of the first things I had to change, was my eye makeup.

I had always used a dark heavy liner - too heavy!
My eyes couldn’t carry that look any more. I began to try new techniques playing with colour combinations, mixing colours and creating what are now my Colourscope ranges.
It was important to me that it had to be quick to apply, although I was addressing the changes, I still didn’t have time to fart about! It had to be quick, simple and easy to apply.

*The first thing to decipher is your Colourscope range - so let’s do that first.

Blue eyes = peaches and Creams

Blog 1 03
Green eyes/Hazel = Heathers and Berries

Brown eyes = lucky you! use either!

Look at your skin tone - if you have a sallow skin then definitely use the H&B range as it will lighten and brighten. If you prefer natural tones then go for P&C.

Look at your skin tone - if you have a sallow skin then definitely use the H&B range as it will lighten and brighten. If you prefer natural tones then go for P&C.

This is important. Just check out the effect - it makes your eye’s pop and brings attention to the gorgeous colour of your eyes, enhancing your natural beauty. I’ve put loads of examples on my website and social media.

So I developed my Technique, using powder liner with a sponge applicator. It worked.
To get a stronger evening look I use a smudge pencil first and applying powder with a sponge applicator over - which intensifies the colour.

The Colourscope ranges are available to look at on my website jojewett.com everything you need to know about me, apart from my bra size, its all there.

Point 2

Ditch the liquid liner!

It looks hard and emphasises crepey fine skin.

I know, It’s hard to change the habits of a lifetime. For most of my clients who want to jump that hurdle of change it can be scary but the rewards are endless. As soon as you start to get those compliments, not about your eye shadow, moreover “you look so well!”, “I never noticed how beautiful your eyes are”. Or “The colour of your eyes they are so blue, green .. “ so be that woman with the twinkling eyes.

The worlds gone nuts! - Zoom is the new normal and we need to embrace it, wether you are holding business meetings, interviews or talking to loved ones - It’s never been more important to learn new skills and feel really confident in the way we look. Great makeup and the skills to use it are the most powerful tools in your beauty regime. So remember, fear of change is for old ladies and we are not old. To my lovely brother - I’m still bloody glamorous - so there!!

Let’s talk about eye liner.

My technique involves a soft outline to shape the eye.
For this you should use powder liner in the darkest shade from your colourscope range.

Use a sponge applicator preferably with a pencil end or a small brush.
First dip the applicator in the dark colour - apply a thin line along the upper lashes important to apply form the outer edge in and taper off half way across the lash line.

Now, lightly line under the bottom lashes making the line thinner as it moves three quarters of the way to the inner corner of the eye.

Use a brush to soften the effect, be careful not to brush it off, just touch the colours together so they merge easily - use the brush to smudge the effect. Don’t forget we don’t want any harsh lines - check out the video.

Always remember to direct your blending upwards which ‘lifts’ the eye at the outer corners, creating an illusion, a bit like an eye lift - without the pain or the cost!

We are not talking cats eyes here!! Leave that for the kids.

It must be subtle and not obvious, done properly its nothing short of a miracle.
Don’t put yourself under pressure and enjoy playing then it will click, giving you the confidence and excitement to get out there and twinkle those baby blues!

*Always remember girls, its only makeup - it comes off!
So don’t get stressed, you may not get it right first time, it takes a little practice but like all things that work - driving a car - riding a bike! It seems scary at first, then it becomes second nature and all is well...

*Cotton buds are your best friend, any spillage or misplaced product is easily swiped away - twist the bud when cleaning up, try not to drag the eye area.

Point 3

When dealing with mature eyes - Products and tools are key to success

The thing to look out for in your products are the pigment in any colour used. The stronger the pigment the more intense the colour becomes so the easier it is to apply.
For that reason, I’ve picked the best products in both ranges - Peaches and Creams and Heathers and Berries, colours I know will work and I love them, now available to buy from my website.

Another point to consider, even if you are slightly visually challenged or like me very challenged - you will need at least a x10 magnifying mirror.
We have to face it girls, and face it we will!
Never underestimate the power of good tools to get the job done.

Key to success with anything on your face is that you see everything clearly. In particular your eyes.

I am always asked about brushes, so I picked my famous five and they are all you need.
Makeup brushes in wraps, like those massive eye shadow palettes, are a con. You may think a big load of brushes are a bargain, believe me it will confuse the life out of you and they just hang around making the place look untidy!
So start afresh - keep it simple, keep it real, great things happen from a very small makeup bag - you can check out my Famous Five at jojewett.com
